As thousands gathered yesterday for the funeral of Tyre Nichols, we at Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. continue to reflect on his killing, and would like to share the following statement:
“We join with the Nichols family, the Memphis community, and the nation in mourning Tyre Nichols’ senseless loss of life. No one deserves the kind of abuse that Mr. Nichols suffered, yet such trauma falls disproportionately and repeatedly on communities of color. We are appalled that yet another Black life has been needlessly cut short by police violence. It underscores the need for all of us to redouble our efforts to combat the deeply ingrained racist systems, policies, and procedures that lead to such tragedies.
“We at CLASI remain committed to our work on behalf of marginalized communities, and to changing the unjust systems that oppress our clients in so many aspects of their lives. We will continue to work together as an organization, and with our partners statewide, to do everything in our power to fight racism and advance justice and equity in our state.”
